The First Person in History to Circumambulate Tasmania: Braving the State’s Harshest Conditions – A Monumental World Record Trek IN SUPPORT OF Mental Health.
He will finish his 46-day circumnavigation of the state on Saturday when he arrives at Salamanca Market in Hobart. He hopes to be recognized by Guinness World Records as the first person to walk the perimeter of Tasmania.
The walk is one of three record attempts made by the Linton family.
Last month Mr Linton’s son Kelvyn (14 ), became the youngest person to complete a coast-to-coast walk of Tasmania when father and son completed an arduous trek from Port Arthur, up the state’s East Coast and on to Latrobe.
Mr Linton continued on alone from Latrobe and walked down the West Coast.
Mr Linton and Kelvyn also hope to be recognized as the first father and son team to walk across Tasmania.
When Mr Linton completes his journey this weekend, he will have covered about 1400km over than 300 hours.
From today, Mr Linton is crossing Jeffreys Track from Lachlan to Grove and will walk through to Huonville, Cygnet, across to Peppermint Bay, up to Kingston and along the coast before arriving at Salamanca Market on Saturday morning.
Mr Linton and Kelvyn have been walking to raise funds for the Black Dog Institute, a not-for-profit organization specializing in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of bipolar disorder and depression.
Mr Linton said they were still short of their $50,000 fundraising goal.
He said his trek had been tough, with some cold nights – including a snow storm at Derwent Bridge.
“The snow was a bit of a challenge,” Mr Linton said.
“When I was in the military, I was trained in mountain survival.
“But that was 20 years ago, so it was a quick reminder. It was pretty bad for a few days.
“I think I’ve achieved bringing awareness to the cause but the raising of funds hasn’t met the expectations – but it’s not over yet.
“I plan to write a book when this is over about the trek.”
